Depression 3

These scriptures and thoughts were provided or inspired by my Pastor, Kent McBay and by others in discussions in his Sunday School class.

Psalms 106:15: And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.

Having our own way instead of God*s way is often a cause of depression. Trouble can come so quickly. We do not know how helpless we are to direct our own lives. We do not know how desperately we need the Bible, God*s will, wisdom, guidance and protection. We cannot afford to be outside of the will of God, not even for a moment. We do not know how quickly we can crash and burn. We do not recognize how freely and readily available God*s word, wisdom, guidance and protection are. We are too often unable to see the consequences of going our own way. I am startled at the accuracy in the name of a TV program many decades ago: Truth Or Consequences.

Jeremiah 10:23: O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps.

Psalms 37:23: The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.

Isaiah 53:6: All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Psalms 106:12-15: Then believed they his words; they sang his praise. 13 They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel: 14 But lusted exceedingly in the wilderness, and tempted God in the desert. 15 And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.

Proverbs 5:21-23: For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings. 22 His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins. 23 He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

Proverbs 3:5: Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.

Without God*s help we cannot even think right, much less do right.

2 Corinthians 10:5: Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Without His help we would stumble into temptation and get trapped in evil.

Luke 11:4b: . . . lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

Proverbs 3:7-8: Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. 8 It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.

James 4:14-16: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. 16 But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.

Proverbs 16:3: Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.

1 Peter 4:19: Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

Proverbs 1:28-33: Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: 29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: 30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. 31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. 32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them. 33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

There is no logical reason not to surrender our lives to the Lord, the source of joy.
